THE DEAD OF DURBAN – WORLD WAR 1

Yesterday, I visited the Great War Memorial in Gardiner Street in Durban. My intention was to photograph all the brass tablets that record the names of those men and women who had enlisted in Durban to serve in the war against Germany and her allies and who had died. I had determined to capture all the names; make a tally; and then to post the list to my blog for the benefit of anyone who might come looking for these soldiers on the internet.

As I moved soberly from list to list in the bright sunshine, photographing the brass tablets, I was most disturbed to discover that a brass tablet listing the names of soldiers who had died in the 2nd World War, had been criminally levered off the granite wall and shamefully stolen. No doubt this tablet was spirited-off to one of those unscrupulous scrap dealers in the Umbilo area. Rhetorically, considering our present dispensation – what is the chance that this tablet will ever be recovered or restored?

My World War 2  list is now minus the names of those soldiers recorded on the missing tablet. Perhaps the Killie Campbell Archives might have the full list.

It is difficult (probably impossible) to fully comprehend the number 8 million, for this is the tally of men who perished in the Great War. Maybe, if one could see 10 million men standing together, one might have some conception of this figure. There is no doubting, that one could never appreciate a fraction of the suffering of that vast host. And what of the sadness of those who  mourned their deaths?

On the 100 anniversary of the commencement of the war, Paul Cummins created an installation at the Tower of London, where the sacrifice of the war dead was symbolically displayed in a spill and spread of thousands of red ceramic poppies, each flower a graphic representation of the death of one soldier. Viewed together, the installation clearly presents the staggering sacrifice paid. And what of Durban? How many men and women died from this small town on the tip of Africa? I had visited the Great War Memorial many times and knew there were many names listed; however, I did not know the precise number. Were there 250, 300, 400, perhaps 500? – surely not that many. It was this ignorance that was the motivation for my visit to the Durban memorial.

When I got home, I sat down behind my desk mid-morning (and with the images of the names displayed on my monitor) methodically and thoughtfully, I typed the names of the soldiers into a document – one – by one – by one. I only finished the task at 11 o’clock at night. As I typed, I reflected on each name – that every one was attached to a soul, to a young man who loved life as much as I do. A chap with the same hopes, and plans and aspirations. Someone who had once felt the cheering Durban sunshine on their face as I did today.

In conclusion – the final number was far greater than I had ever conceived. I repent.

Below is the list of World War 1 deaths. I will add their full names as time allows.

    Dear Mr McCallum
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the great amount of effort you put into the Great War memorial Durban page on your web site, I must admit I came it across it accidently when doing a search for the Gaches Family and through your endeavours I find Vernon Gaches mentioned on the Memorial. I have been piecing Vernon’s life together now for some ten years And it goes

Born and baptised Vernon Peed Gaches 8 -12-1879 in Peterborough England
Father Died May 1880, Mother remarried but Vernon was not include in the arrangement and was brought up by other members of the Gaches family and educated at various boarding schools. He served a apprenticeship with the Railways , and in 1901 Joined the South African Constabulary. and stayed with them until 1907, He is then thought to have joined the Natal Mounted Police,However the records show that he was in 1915 in SW Africa with The SA Vets ,and again in 1916 in East Africa with the SA Engineers, in early 1917 He was sent back to Durban after being hospitalised with malaria and on the 19 February signed up for the S A 1st Infantry and was shipped out to Europe arriving at his unit on the 15 July 1917
He was reported missing on the 29 September 1917 and presumed dead as from that date.

Thank you once again for adding just a little more Information on a man who ten years ago was no more than a baptism entry in the church records, but through the S A Constabulary and the S A Infantry records we now know more about him than most other members of the Family.

I also came upon your website while searching for something else. Congratulations and thanks for your work in preserving these names, and encouragement in doing the same for the WW2 casualties. Reading the familiar Durban surnames on your list brings home the losses felt by so many in Durban, and so frequently, during those wars. Whenever I look at the memorials at my old school of DHS I am shocked at the loss of boys from that school alone, and losses like that are repeated in every school and in the memorials in almost every town in the country – and everywhere else in the world that the combatants came from. They were terrible times.

Thank you for all your effort. I have been researching my family history and managed to find two Hillestad names on your list; one from WW1 and one from WW2. I already knew about both of them, but I did not know their names were displayed at the Great War Memorial.
    Regards, Dayne Skolmen.
